The organization that overseas domain names on the Internet has decided that all pornographic or sex related sites should have domain names that end in .xxx as opposed to the more traditional .com, .ca or .uk.

The Internet Corporation for Names and Numbers (Icann) hopes that by keeping porn and other explicit websites in one area, they will easier for parents to filter out to keep children away from them.

Changes to the .xxx domain will be voluntary but many owners of pornographic sites have already expressed support for the idea since it will also make their product easier to find.

A group called ICM Registry was formed to promote the idea of the .xxx domain. In a statement, ICM said by creating the new .xxx domain, it would 'help protect children from exposure to online pornography and also have a positive impact on online adult entertainment through voluntary efforts of the industry.'

Some successful porn sites may be reluctant to move from their present domain names but ICM is hoping that eventually, it will become the standard on the Internet which will encourage all sexually explicit sites to move there.
