Welcome to the OC. A landslide destroyed 12 expensive homes in Laguna Beach, California, located in Orange County. Another 15 houses were damaged by the landslide.
Luckily, most people were evacuated before the landslide took place and only three people were treated at a local hospital for minor injuries as a result of the incident. Two of the injured people were children who were listed in good condition. The third person sent the hospital, a 71-year-old woman, was reportedly there for emotional stress but did not suffer any serious physical injuries according to published reports.
Witnesses were shocked by the destruction but they did have warning. 'The pipes started making funny noises and the toilet sounded like it was about to explode,' Carrie Joyce, a fire department office manager told the Associated Press. 'I could see one house, huge, we call it the mausoleum, 5,000 square feet or more. It had buckled, the retaining wall in the front of it was cracked. It just looked like the whole house was going,' she said.
The average value of the damaged homes is estimated at $1.75 million each. They are located approximately 15 blocks from the Pacific Ocean in an area called Bluebird Canyon.
Laguna Beach is no stranger to natural disasters. The town, located approximately 50 miles southeast of Los Angeles had a major mudslide hit in February 1998 that killed two people and damaged 300 homes. Five years earlier, a fire swept through the town and destroyed approximately 400 homes.
