The United States embassy in Saudi Arabia has issued a warning to Americans in that country that a terrorist attack is possible according to intelligence reports. The embassy urged all Americans in Saudi Arabia to keep a low profile for the immediate future.
A statement released by the embassy cited 'indications of operational planning' by Islamic militant groups. There was no specific statement as to what the target might be or what method the alleged attacks would use.
Saudi Arabia has had problems with militants who are loyal to al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden who is a native of Saudi Arabia and wishes to overthrow the monarchy there and form an Islamic Republic.
In the past two years, 91 foreigners have been killed by militants according to the Saudi government. The militants have also caused more than $270 million worth of damage to the country.
Saudi Arabia has come under increasing pressure from the United States to fight terrorism since the September 11 attacks.
