A building being razed collapsed on the Upper West Side of Manhattan Thursday, injuring at least five people. One of the injured was an infant. The incident occurred just after 9 AM Thursday morning near the corner of West 100th Street and Broadway.
Racquel Gayle, who was half a block from the site when it collapsed, told WNBC news, 'Everything rocked. I thought it was a terrorist bomb, people were running everywhere. I saw them pull a baby out of the debris; everyone was pitching in and helping, but I stood frozen in fear. I've never seen anything like this.'
The site was being demolished to make way for a hi-rise apartment building. All 25 construction workers at the site were accounted for.
Five people were pulled from the rubble and sent to a local hospital including one infant. Most were believed to have suffered broken bones. It was not clear how the child got inside the rubble.
Subway service has been suspended on the Upper West Side due to the incident.
Investigators are looking into the cause of the collapse.
