Lindsay Davenport had a good start to the weekend at Wimbledon. Friday morning, the ladies top seeded player finished what she started Thursday and defeated third-seeded Amelie Mauresmo 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.
Mauresmo made a valiant effort to take the first game after play resumed when Davenport was just three points away from winning the match. She managed to hold serve but the top-seeded Davenport came back to win the following game and clinch a berth in the finals.
The match had been delayed by heavy rains that fell Thursday evening but the weather held Friday and the match was completed without further delay.
Davenport, 29, will now meet fellow American Venus Williams in the finals Saturday. This will mark the 27th meeting between the two of them. Davenport owns a slim 14-12 edge over Williams in head-to-head competition.
Both of the ladies finalists have won Wimbledon titles before. Davenport triumphed in 1999 and then lost in the finals in 2000 to Williams. Williams won tennis' most prestigious tournament again in 2001 before being the runner up to her sister Serena in 2002 and 2003.
The winner of Saturday's match will earn more than $1 million.
