Christie's International in New York made an offer somebody couldn't refuse: they auctioned off Marlon Brando's hand-marked script for the blockbuster film 'The Godfather' for $312,800, a new record for a screenplay sold at auction.
The price for the 173 page script with Brando's annotations easily bested the pre-sale estimate of between $10,000-$15,000.
The previous record for screenplays at auction was held by Clark Gable's copy of 'Gone With the Wind' which went for $244,000 in 1996. Christie's also sold that famous screenplay.
The screenplay was part of an auction of Brando's personal effects. The 328 items owned by the late Academy Award winning actor went for a total of $2.4 million. Items relating to 'The Godfather' brought the biggest bids. Brando died at the age of 80 in 2004.
