At least 10 Russian soldiers were killed and at least seven more were wounded Friday morning when an explosion went off in the Dagestan region of southern Russia. The soldiers were all riding in a truck when the blast hit, causing the casualties.
According to Rashid Isayev, the head of the criminal police for the province, the explosion took place when the truck carrying troops from the Interior Ministry was driving across the city of Makhachkala, the province capital.
The region of Dagestan has been very unstable as of late. It borders the separatist region of Chechnya and is also plagued by violence between groups of insurgents and criminal gangs.
Local authorities are continuing their investigation into the explosion at this time.
