Los Angeles, January 15 – On Saturday, the British and Australian communities in Hollywood honored their respective countrymen at simultaneous bashes.
The Brits have been at it longer – this was the 11th annual BAFTA L.A. tea party – and it showed in their guest list, which included Spaniards Javier Bardem and Alejandro Amenabar, yanks David Carradine, David Duchovny and wife Tea Leoni, Paul Giamatti, Virigina Madsen and Thomas Haden Church. Oh, and there were some English folks at the tea; Cate Blanchett, Sarah Ferguson, Helen Mirren, Imelda Staunton and Natasha Richardson and her Irish hubby Liam Neeson all sipped, pinkies extended.
It was only the second time the Australians feted their film colony brethren at the swanky Penfolds gala black tie dinner, and while the guest list may have been shorter, the wattage was high with Mel Gibson, Nicole Kidman and Geoffrey Rush on hand. In the "Who Knew?" department, country music star Keith Urban was born in New Zealand. The Penfolds dinner kicks off Australia Week in Los Angeles, known as "G’Day L.A."
Nip/Tuck star Joely Richardson is British, but she went from the BAFTA party to the G’Day dinner, since they were conveniently held at adjacent hotels in Century City. Are we the only ones who think that actor Danny Huston, who was in The Aviator with Blanchett and in Birth with Kidman, bears an uncanny resemblance to Jack Nicholson? Huston’s half-sister is Anjelica Huston, Nicholson’s former lover.
