The hunt is on for 28 detainees who escaped from Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad Friday morning. The escape took place while 38 inmates were being transported by bus from Abu Ghraib to another facility. Ten of the escaped prisoners were recaptured while Iraqi authorities are still searching for the remaining 28.
There is speculation that two Iraqi police officers may have aided the escape as it is highly unusual for a prisoner transfer to take place with such minimal security.
The prisoners had their hands tied behind their backs with rope. The inmates were able to loosen the rope and overpower the guards. One detainee was able to wrest an AK-47 assault rifle from a guard who was later shot and seriously wounded. Four guards and the bus driver were beaten severely by the escapees.
Two of the escaped prisoners were believed to be Egyptians. Most of the detainees were accused of common crimes like theft or murder but were not being held for involvement with insurgents.
