E! Network has announced that it would produce daily half-hour reenactments of the testimony in the upcoming Michael Jackson child molestation trial due to begin on January 31. The network will partner with British Sky Broadcasting to present a dramatization of the prior day's testimony featuring actors portraying Jackson and all the key players in the trial.
The judge in the case has announced that cameras will be banned in the courtroom during the trial. E! will attempt to get around the ban by broadcasting a half-hour of verbatim testimony direct from the court transcripts, Monday through Friday. On Saturday, the network will produce a weekly wrap-up show.
E! Network president and CEO Ted Harbert indicated that the network was very serious about the show. 'We will make it as accurate as possible, both in look and demeanor. There is not one shred of mockery and lightheartedness,' Harbert said. 'It's deadly serious for Michael Jackson and we will treat it as seriously.'
Other networks were skeptical about E!'s endeavor. 'CBS will cover it as we would any other trial. We will depend on artist sketches and we'll show Michael Jackson coming and leaving the courtroom,' said Donna Dees, a spokeswoman for the CBS Evening News.
Court TV will have extensive analysis and commentary from its stable of experts but will not rely on reenactments.
There has been no announcement as to who would play Jackson in the reenactment.
