A Syrian inmate at Abu Ghraib prison testified via videotape that Specialist Charles A. Granger Jr., the 'primary torturer' at the prison and that he enjoyed abusing inmates there.
'He was laughing, he was whistling, he was singing,' Ameen Al-Sheik testified on video through an interpreter. 'That Graner guy, he is a man who really hurt his country, hurt his people,' Al-Sheik added. 'And I think his punishment, God only knows.'
Additional testimony today came from Army investigator Billy Higgason who indicated that many of the prisoners held at Abu Ghraib were common criminals and were not wanted for questioning with regard to anti-American violence or terrorism. Yet, they were subjected to torture anyway including naked pyramids, beatings, forced masturbation and threats of violence.
Earlier, Staff Sergeant Ivan 'Chip' Frederick testified that he and other soldiers were encouraged to treat the inmates harshly by their superiors but stopped short of saying they advocated torture.
'We were being told to do things like handcuff them to the door. The things we were charged with -- we weren't ordered to do those,' Frederick said. Frederick is now serving an eight year sentence for his involvement in the abuse scandal. His testimony was part of his plea bargain agreement.
Defense attorney Guy Womack tried to advance the theory that the Graner and other soldiers were just following orders. 'The more aggressive they became, the more information they got, the better quality intelligence they got, and the more praise they received,' Womack told jurors Monday.
Another prisoner is expected to give videotaped testimony later today before the prosecution rests its case. If convicted, Graner could receive up to 17 1/2 years in a military prison.
