The People's Choice awards went to two films that were snubbed by the Golden Globes but adored by millions of people: Michael Moore's critique of the Bush Administration 'Farenheit 9/11' was named best picture while Mel Gibson's 'The Passion of the Christ' was named best Drama.
Both films were divisive in many ways and has numerous critics as well as admirers. Moore's film was criticized for its political stance by Bush supporters while Gibson's often gruesome depiction of Jesus's crucifiction drew heat from some Jewish organizations who felt the film was anti-Semitic.
For the first time in the history of the People's Choice Awards, voting was permitted on the internet. More than 21 million votes were cast to determine this year's winners.
Moore was very touched by his win and dedicated the award to the soldiers fighting for the U.S. in Iraq. 'This country is still all of ours, not right or left or Democrat or Republican,' Moore declared. 'We live in a great country and we all love our country very much and I am so amazed that you did this — the people of America — that you voted for this film. I'm honored and gratified.'
Gibson thanked 'ordinary people' for making his film a success. 'I depended on you and you were there,' Gibson said. 'If it wasn't for you guys, we would have been dead in the water.'
The biggest winner of the night was 'Shrek 2' which took home five awards including Favorite Comedy Motion Picture, Favorite Animated Motion Picture and Best Sequal. Julia Roberts took home Favorite Female Movie Star while Johnny Depp was given Favorite Male Movie Star.
