It is likely that Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Randy Moss will face a fine from the NFL for his vulger 'mooning' of Packers fans at Lambeau Field yesterday. But Moss should get more: he should be suspended for one game, even if it is a playoff game.
Moss's post-game comments reinforce the fact that he just doesn't understand what the game is all about. To Randy Moss, the world owes him every indulgence he pleases and he owes the world nothing but a good game on the football field. Moss seems to think his talent is his ticket to allow him to do anything he darn well pleases.
After the game, many of Moss's post game comments could not be printed in this column. He did describe his anti-social behavior by saying he was 'just having a little fun with the boys a bit. Hope I don't get in trouble by it, but if I do, I'll take the heat.'
Well, it's not that simple Randy. You see, no matter how talented you may be, you have to realize that the people in the stands, whether they are rooting for your team or against it, are the one's paying your salary. If you and other football stars alienate the fans, there is no NFL. If nobody watches the games on TV or pays to see the games live, Randy Moss doesn't earn his multi-million dollar salary.
More importantly, Moss has to understand simple human decency. He owes people that much just because they are human beings. But Randy only cares about Randy--or so his repeated actions on and off the field make it appear.
Oh and Randy...there are children watching the game on television and in the stands too. Many of them, because of your great talent on the football field, look to you as a role model. I know that they shouldn't, but you see, they do. And Randy, you've made it abundantly clear that you could care less about the example you are setting for them.
Over the course of his career, Moss has made it abundantly clear that he'll do what he damn well pleases and his teammates, the league, the fans and the rest of the world be damned. Until this year, Moss almost never blocked on running plays or ran out his patterns when he wasn't expecting to get the ball. Hey, I'm Randy Moss, I don't need to do those things.
Moss's decision to leave the field with two seconds remaining in last week's season finale against Washington with an onsides kick still to come probably meant nothing in terms of the outcome of the game, but speaks volumes about Moss's poor attitude. Football is a team game and it is vital to be there for your teammates. That's how you show you respect them and the effort they are making. Unless you're Randy Moss.
Off the field, Moss has gotten into trouble with the law during his NFL career. Something about shoving a police officer after receiving a ticket. No respect for authority. Oh, did I mention the officer was female? No respect for women either.
Moss has demonstrated that he just doesn't respect anybody or anything but himself. He's a danger to the game of football. Even a large fine will mean nothing next to the outrageous money Moss earns on the gridiron. Paul Tagliabue should take the next step. It may be considered extreme, but Moss is a repeat offender and has clearly shown that he still doesn't understand that his infantile antics are bad for the game. No man is bigger than the game. Show Randy that. Make him sit out this weekend's game at Philadelphia. Let him know that there is a cost to being rude to the fans and the media. Let him know the world is bigger than Randy Moss. Send him the message before it's too late.
