The saying 'everything in moderation' gained more creedance today as a new study revealed that moderate drinking helped reduce the risk of stroke in men while both excess drinking or no drinking at all increased the risk significantly.
Those men who enjoyed three or four drinks per week reduced their risk of stroke by 32 percent according to the study. Red wine was also found to be good, those that drank one or more glasses of red wine per day had a 46 percent lower risk for strokes.
Unfortunately, too much of a good thing is not a good thing. Those men who had three or more drinks of hard liquor a day increased their chances of having a stroke by almost 45 percent.
The study tracked more than 38,000 men between the ages of 40 and 75 over a 14 year period.
'What we can say, at least for men, is that one or two drinks every other day seems to be the way to go in terms of cardiovascular health.' said Kenneth Mukamal, a professor at Harvard Medical School and the leader of the study.
So drink up...at least a little. It's for your health.
