The filming of a scene from the movie 'Free Zone' starring Natalie Portman was interrupted in Jerusalem yesterday when dozens of ultra-Orthodox Jews objected to Portman and her co-star kissing in front of the Western Wall.
The Western Wall is the last remaining remnants from the Holy Temple and is the holiest religious site in the world for Jews. Because the wall is run by extremely traditional Jews, men and women are separated by a barrier to prevent contact between the sexes during prayer.
According to the Israeli paper Yediot Ahronot, dozens of Orthodox Jews rushed Portman and her co-star, Israeli actor Aki Avni when they started to embrace and kiss too close to the wall. Protesters shouted 'Immoral, immoral!' at the two actors.
Police rushed in to protect Portman and Avni. They agreed to leave and return at a later time to finish the scene which they did.
The 23-year-old Portman was born in Israel and is presently staying in the Israeli capital to study at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
