The list of foods containing the illegal dye Sudan I, a known carcinogen, continues to grow. According to British health officials, nearly 400 foods now contain the cancer causing dye which was originally placed in Worcestershire Sauce.
Unfortunately, the sauce was then used in a large number of prepared foods. The British Food Standards Agency also admitted that the tests on food items are random but it is up to individual suppliers to determine if there food contains Sudan I.
Sudan I is a red food dye that is used in waxes and shoe polish. The substance has been outlawed in Great Britain since July 2003 but Premier Foods apparently found that some of the dye got into its food.
The foods that contain Sudan I include sausages, pizza and various seasonings.
A recall of the contaminated food is underway although more tainted food is expected to be discovered in the near future. 'I think there is a very strong chance that we will be having to make further announcements,' Jon Bell, Chief Executive of the British Food Standards Agency told the BBC.
The foods in question were exported to Europe, North America and other areas.
Despite the presence of the cancer causing agent, health officials are trying to encourage people to remain calm. They describe the health risk from consuming small amounts of Sudan I as 'very small.'
