It was a good news/bad news scenario for Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon today. The good news was that Israel's Attorney General, Meni Mazuz, will not prosecute Prime Minister Sharon and his top aides in a campaign finance case. However, today, the Justice Ministry did announce they would be indicting Sharon's son Omri.
Omri Sharon is accused of setting up a fake company to direct cash into Likud Party coffers for his father's 1999 campaign. Omri Sharon is a Likud Party member of Israel's parliament or Knesset.
'Charges will be brought against Knesset Member Omri Sharon,' the Justice Ministry said in a statement. 'The attorney general decided to close the file in all matters in this case pertaining to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on grounds of insufficient evidence.'
The official charges are expected to be failing to keep proper accounts, making illegal campaign contributions and other crimes.
The Attorney General's office will request that Omri Sharon's immunity as a member of the Knesset be revoked for the case to move forward.
