The Food and Drug Administration has announced that it has no intention to restrict the sale of the drug Adderall XR despite a decision by Canadian health officials to ban the drug out of safety concerns.
The drug, which is used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD, was found to cause 20 cases of sudden death and a dozen strokes in patients some of which were children. In fact, 14 of the 20 cases of sudden death and two of the strokes reported involved children.
The FDA examined the reports on Adderall XR and decided that the drug need not be taken off shelves in the United States.
Adderall XR is manufactured by a British company called Shire Pharmaceuticals Group PLC. Shire released a statement saying it remained confident in its product's safety.
Approximately 700,000 people in the United States take Adderall XR. For now, the controversial medication will remain available in the United States.
