Help for pre-menopausal women who are experiencing a decrease in sexual desire may be just around the corner. Vivus, Inc., a company that manufactures drugs that treat impotence, is introducing a testosterone spray developed to help boost female sexual desire. A recently concluded clinical trial indicates that this may be a breakthrough, especially for pre-menopausal women who suffer from decreased libido.
The 28-week study involved 261 women who tested with low levels of testosterone and who stated that their decreased libidos had caused them concern. The spray was administered once a day to the abdomen. A control group was given a spray containing no testosterone. The test group reported an increase in sexual desire that was considered significant.
Professor Susan Davis of Monash University where the clinical trials were conducted is optimistic. 'Earlier studies have demonstrated the efficacy of transdermal testosterone delivery for the treatment of naturally and surgically menopausal women, she said. “This new study supports the findings of our earlier study that pre-menopausal women with low libido can also enjoy an increase in satisfactory sexual events following treatment with transdermal testosterone.'
Side effects were mild skin irritation and several women noticed an increase in hair growth as a result of the spray.
