A British journalist working for the BBC has been killed in Somalia today. According to eyewitnesses, 39-year-old Kate Peyton was shot by a militiaman near the Sahafi Hotel in Mogadishu. After the shooting, Peyton was rushed to a local hospital where she later died from internal bleeding.

There was no motive revealed for the shooting and the gunman managed to drive away and escape.

Peyton was accompanied by Peter Greste, a fellow journalist. Greste was unharmed in the incident.

The BBC released a statement on after learning of Peyton's death. 'Kate was one of our most experienced and respected foreign affairs producers who had worked all over Africa and all over the world. She will be greatly missed, both professionally and personally.'

Somalia has been involved in a civil war since 1991. The capital city of Mogadishu is known to have a lot of uncontrolled and unpredictable violence.
