Carl Rove, the man behind George W. Bush's two successful campaigns to become president has a new assignment now that there are no more elections to win. Today, it was announced that Rove has been promoted to deputy chief of staff.
The man, lampooned in one film as 'Bush's Brain' will continue to shape the president's strategy and agenda as well as taking on the responsibilities associated with his new position.
According to White House spokesman Scott McClellan, Rove will now be responsible for the oversight of all White House policy development and coordination of the Domestic Policy Council, the National Economic Council, the National Security Council and the Homeland Security Council.
Some Democrats were less than pleased with Rove's selection. 'Empowering Rove in this way shows that Bush cares more about political positioning than honest policy discussions,' DNC Chairman Terence R. McAuliffe said in a statement. 'Bush knows that Rove is neither an economic nor a national security expert; he's simply an ideological strategist who has a history of bending the truth and using dirty tricks to get his way.'
An advisor to the President defended Rove's promotion. 'I don't think people realize how much of a wonk Karl is,' said Michael J. Gerson, a senior Bush adviser. 'He's more up on more issues than anyone at the White House.'
For now, he's also expanding his duties within the Bush Administration.
