Approximately 200,000 people gathered in Addis Ababa on Sunday to commemorate the 60th anniversary of reggae legend Bob Marley's birth.
This marked the first time Marley's birthday was marked with an 'official' celebration outside of Marley's native Jamaica. As a Rastafarian, Marley believed his spiritual home was Ethiopia.
The Bob Marley Foundation is now considering holding annual celebrations in other African nations each year. Performers from throughout Africa and the rest of the world gathered to honor the spirit of Marley who died in 1981.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and his family were in attendance to see groups like Youssou N'dour, Angelique Kidjo and Marley's son Ziggy.
Marley helped bring reggae music and the Rastafarian faith to millions of people across the world. He is best known for songs such as 'Buffalo Soldier' and 'I Shot the Sheriff.'
