It didn't take long for other NFL teams to start breaking up the Super Bowl champion Patriots. Just hours after New England defeated the Philadelphia Eagles to win their third championship in four years, defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel announced he was taking the head coaching position with the Cleveland Browns.
The 57-year-old Crennel has five Super Bowl rings as an assistant but is just getting his first opportunity to be a head coach. 'I've been in this business for a little while,' Crennel told reporters after the Super Bowl. 'I've always been told if you work hard and you're good at what you do, you'll get an opportunity to move up.'
The details of the contract have not been worked out yet but it is believed Crennel will seek a five or six year deal. According to Crennel's agent, the Browns called about two minutes after the Patriots won the Super Bowl.
Crennel will become the first African-American head coach in the storied history of the Browns. Cleveland has a lot of rebuilding to do as they posses the third pick in this year's NFL draft.
The Patriots have already lost both their offensive and defensive coordinators from this year's coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Charlie Weis is leaving to take the head coaching position at the University of Notre Dame.
