New Cell Processor Could Revolutionize Games and Hi Def TVs

A new type of cell microprocessor will be unveiled today in San Francisco that experts say will revolutionize the home entertainment industry. IBM, Toshiba and Sony are expected to debut the new microprocessor which will first be installed in the new Sony Playstation 3 games in 2006. Later, Sony and Toshiba will introduce the chip in high definition televisions.

This type of cell can run several chips at one time which will make it perfect for viewing movies and other broadband applications. In fact, some industry experts call the new processor a 'supercomputer on a chip.' The new chip has different 'cells' which can work independently on different tasks rather than have separate cores working on the same task like most other computers do. This will help two different computers that are networked work better together. One computer can actually use the memory of another to perform certain tasks.

The official unveiling of the new technology will be at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference in San Francisco later today.
