Horror was king at movie theaters this weekend with 'Boogeyman' taking in an estimated $19.5 million to take first place at the box office. The horror film, directed by Sam Raimi, debuted at number one despite generally poor reviews from the critics. The film was made for only $7 million so it has already guaranteed itself a profit after just one weekend.
'The Wedding Date,' a romantic comedy starring Debra Messing, took a distant second place with $11 million in receipts. Three quarters of its audience were women.
'Are We There Yet?' dropped into third place with a $10.4 million gross followed by last week's number one 'Hide and Seek' which took in $8.9 million over the weekend.
Two films that did very well with Academy Award nominations were next. Clint Eastwood's 'Million Dollar Baby' held down the fifth slot with $8.8 million followed by the Howard Hughes biopic 'The Aviator' with $5.4 million.
'Meet the Fockers,' 'Sideways,' 'Racing Stripes' and 'Coach Carter' rounded out the top 10.
