A planned wedding celebration became a tragedy today when 52 people were killed and at least 10 others were injured when a train hit a tractor. The accident took place near Kanhan, approximately 490 miles northeast of Bombay. The tractor was carrying a wedding party and guests.
Eyewitnesses say the train was crossing the tracks when the train came. The impact did not cause the train to derail and all of the dead and wounded were on the tractor and its trailer.
'The passenger train was traveling at about 45 mph and the driver applied the emergency brakes,' said Jagdish Kumar, a spokesman for the South-Eastern Central Railway.
According to Kumar, the gate at the railroad crossing where the tractor was hit was unmanned. As a result, the guards preventing traffic from crossing the tracks were not in place at the time of the accident.
India has the third largest government run railroad system in the world after Russia and China. Accidents are very common in India due to a lack of enforcement of safety standards.
