The relative lull in attacks by insurgents in Iraq has ended with deadly results today. At least 26 Iraqis and 2 U.S. Marines were killed today in numerous terrorist attacks by insurgents throughout the country.
The most violent single act of terror was an attack on a bus full of Iraqi army recruits. The insurgents forced a minibus carrying the recruits to stop south of Kirkuk and then gunned down 12 of the people inside. Two recruits were let go in order to warn others according to published reports.
Two U.S. Marines were killed late Wednesday in Anbar province which includes Fallujah. Reports indicate that the two Americans were killed during a shootout with insurgents.
American appointed interim Prime Minister Allawi had previously said that the success of the recent election dealt a big blow to the insurgency. Today, he indicated that despite the renewed violence, the government would prevail.
'The coming days and weeks will show whether this trend will continue,' Allawi told Iraqi television. 'But the final outcome will be failure. They will continue for months but this will end.'
Meanwhile, results from the January 30 elections may still be weeks away as the counting of ballots continues. Early results show the United Iraqi Alliance, supported by Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani with the most votes while Allawi's group was a distant second. Only 10 percent of the ballots had been counted thus far.
