The latest unemployment figures released in Germany today indicate that more Germans are out of work now than at any time since 1933 when Adolph Hitler came to power. Just over five million Germans are currently listed as unemployed.
The government rushed to defend itself against any comparisons between 1933 and 2005. 'Naturally this is a horrendous figure but I warn all those with responsibility against falling into shock,' Economy and Labor Minister Wolfgang Clement said. 'Quite apart from these hysterical and sometimes absurd comparisons, the figures reflect what has been reality in the Federal Republic for years.'
There will be significant political fallout against Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, who was elected on a platform to reduce unemployment. Schroeder is up for reelection next year. The German economy grew 1.7 percent last year and is projected to grow another 1.6 percent in 2005.
Experts say that growth of at least two percent is needed for any real changes in to take place in German unemployment.
