More Awareness Needed of Heart Disease in Women

Although heart disease is the number one killer of American women, many people, including physicians, still do not seem to regard this as a serious health risk. In fact, cardiovascular disease kills ten times as many women than breast cancer.

In an attempt to draw attention to this problem, the American Heart Association is kicking of the 'Go Red for Women' campaign. On Friday, women across the country are being asked to wear red in honor of women who have suffered from heart disease as well as to spread the word that men are not the only ones at risk.

The American Heart Association kicks has targeted February as 'American Heart Month,' and has published a magazine, Recipes for the Heart featuring 37 heart-healthy suggestions. Changing one's eating habits is a good start for developing heart-healthy habits. The magazine will be sold at grocery stores for $3.99.

The Heart Association reports that over 500,000 die each year from cardiovascular disease. Even though many women still think that breast cancer is the biggest killer, in reality a woman has ten times more of a risk of dying from heart disease than breast cancer.
