Emmitt Smith, the NFL's all-time leading rusher will reportedly announce his retirement from football in the very near future. A report from ESPN says that the announcement could be made any day now.
Although he spent the last two years of his career with the Arizona Cardinals, Smith spent 13 years with the Dallas Cowboys who he helped lead to three Super Bowl titles.
He retires with more rushing yardage in his career than any other back in NFL history with 18,355. He passed the late Walter Payton in 2002. Smith was named to the Pro Bowl eight times and finished with 164 career touchdowns.
Even this past season, running behind a Cardinals offensive line that was average at best, Smith picked up 937 yards to lead the team and added nine touchdowns.
Smith was drafted in the first round by the Cowboys in 1990 with the 17th overall pick.
Sources indicate that Smith will sign a ceremonial one day contract with Dallas so he can retire as a Cowboy. He is a lock for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton and will be eligible for induction in 2009.
