Adnan Dulaimi, a senior Sunni political leader in Iraq has called on his follow Sunnis to reject the nation's draft constitution which will be voted on by the people in October.
'We will do our best to make sure this draft fails at the referendum,' Dulaimi told reporters in Baghdad on Tuesday.
The main criticism Mr. Dulaimi had on the draft constitution is that it 'does not achieve the aspirations of all Iraqis.'
In addition to opposing the draft, Sunni leaders also announced that they wanted to talk to radical Shi'ite cleric Moqtada Sadr in an attempt to unite the two factions in opposition to the draft.
U.S. envoy to Iraq, Zalmay Khalizad, said there still could be changes made to the draft in a late attempt to gain Sunni support.
I believe that a final, final draft has not yet been, or the edits have not been, presented yet, so that is something that Iraqis will have to talk to each other and decide for themselves,' explained Mr. Khalizad.
In order to have the constitution pass, Sunni support will be necessary. If just three of the 18 Iraqi provinces fail to approve the constitution draft by a two-thirds majority, it will fail.
