Roger Federer had no problem winning his first round match Tuesday at the U.S. Open, downing Czech Ivo Minar 6-1, 6-1, 6-1. Fittingly, the match was over in 61 minutes.
Federer had 12 aces and 34 winners in the match while compiling only 10 unforced errors. Minar, who was making his U.S. Open debut, had only 12 winners in the match and trailed 5-0 in the first set before finally winning a game.
The U.S. Open's hard court surface is perfect for Federer's game. In fact, Federer has won his last 29 matches on hard court surfaces and six of his nine titles have come on hard courts as well.
The 12th seed in the men's bracket, Tim Henman was the biggest upset of Tuesday's early play. Henman lost to Spain's Fernando Verdasco in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
