Pitt's Split One Step Closer

Once known as Hollywood's 'Golden Couple,' Brad Pitt and Jennifer Anniston are now just six weeks away from the formal end of their 4-1/2 year marriage. According to court records, the couple's divorce papers were filed in L.A. on August 19. Under California law, a divorce does not become final for six weeks following the filing. Neither can remarry until the divorce is final on October 2.

The divorce papers were signed by retired judge Jill S. Robbins whom the couple had hired to handle their case privately. The couple separated in January and Aniston filed for divorce in March.

The papers, which were signed by Pitt, Aniston and their attorneys, read in part, 'Judgment of dissolution is entered. Marital or domestic partnership status is terminated and the parties are restored to the status of single persons.'

Neither party is seeking alimony, and they have agreed on a split of marital property. Their Beverly Hills home is for sale, and Pitt has taken control of Plan B, the production company that they started together in 2002. Aniston will continue working on projects that were in development prior to the split.

Although all parties deny it, rumors persist that what precipitated the couple's split was Pitt's infatuation with Angelina Jolie. Pitt and Jolie worked together on the film Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and have become fodder for the tabloids ever since.

For her part, Aniston says she has moved on. In a revealing interview in Vanity Fair, she said, 'The sad thing, for me, is the way it's been reduced to a Hollywood cliché -- or maybe it's just a human cliché.
