New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning will miss at least one pre-season game as a result of a sprained elbow he suffered in last Saturday's game against the Carolina Panthers. That means that Manning will not play in the annual pre-season contest between the Giants and their cross-town rivals the New York Jets.
Manning was injured on a play in which Carolina's Julius Peppers stripped the ball from the New York quarterback and returned it for a touchdown. Manning's arm continued to go forward and slammed into Peppers' helmet, causing the injury.
Manning continued to play after the injury and later threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Amani Toomer.
The injury was examined by Dr. Russell Warren, the Giants team physician who confirmed the bruise and sprain on the inside of the quarterback's right (throwing) elbow. Giants coach Tom Coughlin described Manning's status as 'week-to-week.'
The Giants are scheduled to open the regular season on September 11 at home against the Arizona Cardinals. Coach Coughlin hopes to have a healthy Manning back for that game.
