Pop star Madonna was hospitalized Tuesday after a horseback riding accident at Ashcombe House, her home just outside London, according to her publicist. The accident took place on Madonna's 47th birthday.
The singer, who now prefers to be known as Esther, suffered three cracked ribs, a broken collarbone and a broken hand according to her spokeswoman in New York, Liz Rosenberg.
Published reports indicate that Madonna was riding a new and unfamiliar horse at the time the accident took place. She was accompanied by an assistant when the accident took place. Her two children, Rocco and Lourdes, were at home but not accompanying their mother on horseback.
Director Guy Ritchie, Madonna's husband, rushed her to a local hospital for treatment, Rosenberg reported. The name and location of the hospital were not revealed for privacy purposes. It is expected she will be released from the hospital later Tuesday evening.
