The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department will assigns a sheriff's detective to investigate the incident in which a photographer who was staking out singer Britney Spears over the weekend was shot with a BB gun.
According to the a spokesman for the Sheriff's Department, the high amount of media scrutiny the case has received led them put the case on the 'front burner.'
Because of the media attention, we'll probably put this on the front burner to settle the whole thing,' said sheriff's Sergeant Robert Knudson.
A detective will be assigned on Monday. According to Knudson, more than 12 phone calls were received from the press regarding the incident.
The photographer, Brad Diaz, was shot in the leg with a BB gun while he was standing 150-200 feet from a residence where Britney Spears was rumored to be attending a baby shower in her honor. It is not certain whether or not Spears was actually inside the house at the time of the incident.
Spears' body guards have told authorities they were not involved in the shooting. Diaz was hospitalized briefly after the incident, treated and released.
It is comforting to see that the sheriff's office is spending its limited resources on a case that does not even rise to the level of assault with a deadly weapon.
