Save CBGB, Bubeleh

New York, August 1 – Debbie Harry turned 60 years old in July, but she’s not on the granny track. Instead, she was rocking out on Monday at legendary Bowery rock ‘n roll dive CBGB. Harry did an acoustic set, accompanied only by guitar and keyboards, and the audience was a bit grayer than the usual CBGB crowd. Springsteen guitarist Steve Van Zandt, Patti Smith guitarist Lenny Kaye and former Ramones drummer Tommy Ramone joined Harry in announcing an effort to save the graffiti-scarred birthplace of punk rock, which has been involved in a dispute with its landlord, and faces closure when its current lease expires at the end the month. A roster of concerts this month will culminate with a free event in Washington Square Park on August 31, a sort of rally that, depending upon the status of negotiations, will either celebrate CBGB’s iconic history or serve to pressure the parties to come to a lease agreement.
