The blue gingham dress made famous by actress/singer Judy Garland in the 1939 classic film 'The Wizard of Oz' was sold at auction Wednesday for $285,000.
The dress was offered for auction by Bonham's auctioneers of London and was purchased by an as of yet unidentified telephone bidder.
The price the dress sold for was more than four times the estimated value prior to the auction.
The blue dress is one of the most recognizable outfits worn in Hollywood history. It was custom made for Garland who was 17 at the time the film was made. It has a 27-inch waist and still has Garland's name sewn on a hem inside.
The film 'The Wizard of Oz' remains one of the most beloved films of all time. Generations of Americans and people worldwide have grown up watching the story of Dorothy, the Kansas farm girl who is sent to the magical land of Oz by a tornado. She is chased by the Wicked Witch of the West and aided by the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion as well as the mysterious Wizard of Oz himself.
