Slumping outfielder Andruw Jones led the way as the Atlanta Braves downed the New York Mets 8-4 Wednesday afternoon at Shea Stadium. Jones had three hits including a home run to lead the Atlanta attack.
The game featured two pitchers facing their former teams. Mike Hampton who helped the Mets reach the 2000 World Series, pitched for Atlanta while ex-Braves ace Tom Glavine was on the mound for New York. Hampton got the better of the action, going seven innings to improve his record to 3-0 on the season.
Glavine did not fair so well against his former mates. Glavine gave up seven runs on 12 hits in just 4 1/3 innings to fall to 1-3 on the season. His record against the Braves since singing with New York prior to the 2003 season is now 1-7 with a dreadful 9.36 ERA.
Jones snapped a 3-for-47 slump with a homer, a double and a single. He also scored three runs. Raul Mondesi, Eddie Perez and Wilson Betemit also went deep for the Braves. It was Betemit's first career major league home run.
Cliff Floyd and Doug Mientkiewicz homered for the Mets. Floyd increased his consecutive game hitting streak to 14 in the process.
The win gave the Braves a series win as they captured two out of three at Shea. They have now won four of the six meetings between the two teams.
The Braves are now 13-9 on the young season while the Mets fall to 11-11.
