The United Nations based thriller 'The Interpreter' starring Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn captured the top spot at the box office with $22.8 million in gross revenue. Sydney Pollack directed the film which received positive reviews from most critics.
Interestingly enough, the success of 'The Interpreter' was based on an audience of people over the age of 35. 60 percent of the film's audience did not fit the young demographic that most studios count on to drive the box office.
The remake of the horror film 'The Amityville Horror' showed good staying power in its second week of release coming in second place with $14.2 million. 'Sahara' continued its strong showing with $9 million for the weekend and a third place finish.
Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet's romantic comedy 'A Lot Like Love' finished a disappointing fourth for the weekend with $7.7 million. Industry insiders expected a stronger opening based on Kutcher's star power and box office appeal.
Stephen Chow's martial arts comedy 'Kung Fu Hustle' finally opened nationwide this weekend after doing very well in limited release. The critically acclaimed film took fifth place for the weekend with $7.3 million.
