Zacarias Moussaoui, the only man held in the United States in connection with the terrorist attacks on the United States which took place on September 11, 2001, will enter a guilty plea today in Federal Court. Judge Leonie Brinkema is expected to accept Moussaoui's plea which says he was part of an Al-Qaeda conspiracy to commit acts of terrorism against the United States.
Moussaoui attempted to enter a guilty plea in 2002 but recanted it one week later. Many observers of Moussaoui's behavior question whether or not the French citizen is competent to enter the plea.
His behavior over the course of the trial has been 'unsteady.' Moussaoui wanted to represent himself but in 2003, Judge Brinkema said he was no longer permitted to do that. She said his handwritten legal papers 'include contemptuous language that would never be tolerated from an attorney and will no longer be tolerated from this defendant.'
The rants Moussaoui wrote about included wanting 'anthrax for Jew sympathizer only,' calling then-Attorney General John Ashcroft 'the Democratic Jerk' and referred to Judge Brinkema as 'Leonie you Despotically Judge.'
The trial has been delayed due to a motion that was finally decided by the U.S. Supreme Court. The court allowed an Appeals Court ruling to stand stating that Moussaoui did not have the right to call three suspected Al-Qaeda terrorists now in American custody to testify on his behalf.
After the guilty plea is entered, a trial will be held to determine Moussaoui's sentence. He could face the death penalty although many observers feel that by plea bargaining, he is hoping a deal can be made that would prevent his execution.
