The blue and white gingham dress worn by Judy Garland in the 1939 classic 'The Wizard of Oz' will be auctioned in London by Bonhams & Butterfields on April 26. The estimated value is between $50,000 and $70,000.
'This dress represents the quintessential magic of childhood in the most beloved film of the 20th century,' said Jon Baddeley, group head of Bonhams collector's department. 'It has become a cherished memory for millions of fans worldwide and was worn by one of the most talented and respected stars in Hollywood.'
Garland's name appears on a label inside the hem. The actress was 17 when she played Dorothy Gale of Kansas in the classic film.
The dress is presently on display in San Francisco and will be displayed in Los Angeles later this month. It represents the ultimate in "Oz" memorabilia.
One pair of the ruby slippers, worn by Garland in the film are on display at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC.
