According to a report published in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the Green Bay Packers have signed free agent safety Arturo Freeman to a one-year contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The 28-year-old Freeman played his first five NFL season with the Dolphins. He rejoins former Dolphins defensive coordinator and interim head coach Jim Bates who is the new defensive coordinator in Green Bay. Freeman can start immediately for the Packers and can even help other players learn the new defensive scheme.
Freeman fills a big need for help at safety for the Packers who lost starter Darren Sharper as a salary cap casualty earlier this off-season as well as backup safety Bhawoh Jue. The only holdover at safety from last season is strong safety Mark Roman who had a sub-par year in 2004.
Freeman has started 29 games in his NFL career and has made five interceptions and 3.5 sacks in 72 NFL games.
