Tom Selleck, one of the biggest stars in television, is back in his most famous role, playing Detroit Tiger baseball cap wearing Thomas Magnum. Season Two of 'Magnum, P.I.' released by Universal. All twenty-two episodes of season two are included in this box set, which feature some of the best shows of the entire series. Magnum’s red Ferrari is back on the streets on Hawaii, chasing down bad guys and solving mysteries, with the help of his two good friends, Rick, (Larry Manetti) and helicopter maven T.C. (Roger E. Mosley). Rounding out the cast of characters is Jonathan Higgins (John Hillerman) who continues to drive Magnum crazy and further the debate of whether or not he is truly Robin Masters.
The season opens with 'Billy Joe Bob,' when Magnum helps find the man who murdered the sister of a hot blooded Texan. One of the best episodes of the season is titled 'The Woman on the Beach.' Rick falls in love with a woman who disappears into thin air after the two share a moment on the beach. Magnum goes out to find this mystery beauty, only to discover she is believed to be dead for over 35 years. The episode plays with the supernatural, and even a skeptic like Magnum is left to wonder at the end of the day.
Disc 1 features a two hour episode titled 'Memories are Forever,' which offers us a view into Magnum’s past. Magnum believes he sees his former wife, Michelle, a woman he married during the Vietnam war. The only problem being she died due to an explosion. The opening of the episode is truly well done, as we catch a glimpse of Magnum in the war, watching his wife die as the entire sequence is shot in slow motion, only to find Magnum waking up in the present day from this nightmare. One of the best parts about Magnum P.I. was the voice over that existed in every episode. This one is truly special, as after his dream, Magnum tells us that 'Dreams are supposed to represent your subconscious wishes and conflict. Sort of a private movie you write, produce and direct, only you can’t hide your eyes in your dreams, even when they are scaring you to death.' This episode is touching, poignant, and justifies purchasing this DVD collection by itself.
Season Two is filled with guest stars, including Joanna Kerns, Tyne Daly, Mimi Rogers, and Pat Morita. Jill St John shows up in the season two finale, 'Three Minus Two,' which finds Magnum entering the world of fashion, doing what he does best, saving the day and finding the bad guy. Each episode highlights the beautiful Hawaii coast, reminds us of Magnum’s 'love' of Higgins’ dogs, and contains the great chemistry the cast shared for eight seasons.
Sadly, this DVD collection is pretty much bare bones when it comes to extra bonus material. The only addition items on the collection are episodes of two other 80’s television classics, The A-Team, episode 'Diamonds and Dust' and Knight Rider 'Brother’s Keeper.' Season two of both series are being released, along with Magnum P.I. You won’t regret adding 'Magnum P.I. The Complete Second Season' to your collection. Like a good bottle of wine, it simply gets better with age.
