The health of Pope John Paul II continues to deteriorate and a spokesman for the Vatican has described his condition as 'very grave.'
According to the Vatican, the pope's breathing is now shallow and his kidneys are failing as a result of multiple health problems. Overnight, the 84-year-old pontiff suffered heart failure. Still, he clings to life.
The Vatican's statement read, 'The general conditions and cardio-respiratory conditions of the Holy Father have further worsened. The clinical picture indicates cardio-circulatory and renal insufficiency.'
The pope was described as conscious, however and was alert and awake this morning while one of his aides read the story of Jesus's crucifixion and burial from the bible. He was also taking part in prayers with those around him.
After suffering heart failure last night, the pope asked not to be moved to a hospital, preferring to remain at his residence. There is a tradition of popes remaining in the Vatican when they are near death.
For now, the Vatican has asked Catholics around the world to pray for the pope as he clings to life.
