September’s slow box office showed no signs of letting up this weekend. It had been hoped that the opening of “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” would bring audiences to the movies. While the movie did come in at No. 1, the numbers were nothing to write home about. The movie, which was filmed entirely by having actors act against a blue screen brought home an estimated $16.2 million. The $70 million film was a risk for Paramount as well as a test of whether audience want movies that are entirely computer-generated. The action-adventure fantasy stars Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie fighting giant robots in 1930s New York. The film from first-time director Kerry Conran, was supposed to premiere this summer but was delayed due to post-production issues. Early number show that the majority of the audiences was viewers over 25, not the ideal audience movie studios aim for.
In second place, was a more traditional film, “Mr. 3000” starring Bernie Mac in his first leading role. The baseball comedy brought in $9.2 million. In third was last week’s top movie “Resident Evil: Apocalypse” which earned another $9 million. While this was a significant drop from last week’s total it was still respectable for a genre movie.
Overall viewership for the top 10 movies plummeted more than 25 percent compared with last year.
