Funk singer Rick James had nine different drugs in his system when he died in August. James, 56, died in his sleep of a heart attack. Toxicology reports have revealed that cocaine and methamphetamine, as well as prescription medications for pain relief and anxiety such as Vicodin and Valium were in his system at the time of death. None of the drugs or drug combinations were deadly in and of themselves but the coroner concluded that they may have led to heart failure.
James who was infamous for being a self-proclaimed bad boy, as well as for his hit “Superfreak” was also suffering from diabetes. He had a pacemaker and has suffered a stroke in 1998. His family had said that the singer had died of natural causes but because the singer had not seen a doctor in over six weeks, the LA County Coroner’s office ordered the autopsy. When the autopsy did not immediately determine cause of death, the toxicology tests were ordered. James had battled addiction to drugs including crack cocaine in the past. His death has not been ruled a drug overdose but drugs were a contributing factor.
