Halloween audiences were in the mood to be spooked this weekend. 'The Grudge,' starring Sarah Michelle Gellar continued as the top grossing movie of the weekend for the second week in a row. It brought in $22.4 million which was down from last week's take of over $40 million. The movie based on a Japanese thriller 'Ju: On' lost only 43 percent of its audience which is a strong showing for a horror movie. The movie is rated PG13 and relies more on suspense than blood. Third place also went to a horror movie, 'Saw' which scared up $17.4 million with its mixture of traditional mixture of serial killings and gore. In a Halloween season with limited horror options, these two easily dominated the market.
Coming in a strong second was 'Ray,' which is full of Oscar buzz for Jamie Foxx who plays soul legend Ray Charles. The movie took in $20.1 million and will probably continue to do well over the next few weeks based on the strong reviews it has received. The movie only in a far smaller amount of theaters than the other movies that were in the top ten. This movie will likely remain in increasingly wider release for months.
This week's clunker was Nicole Kidman's controversial new movie, 'Birth' opening with only $1.7 million. The drama features Kidman as a widow who meets a 10-year-old boy who claims to be her dead husband. Compare this to 'Shark Tale' which still managed to come in fourth with $8.0 million or 'Shall We Dance?' which hung onto fifth place with $6.3 million. Perhaps Kidman can seek consolation from Ben Affleck, his ``Surviving Christmas,'' took in a tiny $2.6 million in its second week.
