Redskins Game Sunday to Determine Presidential Election

It's one of those crazy coincidences that can't possibly be accurate...or could it? In every presidential election since 1936, the outcome of the Washington Redskins last home game before the election has indicated which candidate would win the election. If the Redskins won the game, the incumbant would win re-election. If Washington was defeated, a new man would occupy the White House.

'It's kind of amazing,' Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs said. 'You wouldn't think something like that would line up that many times.'

But it has lined up this way ever since Franklin D. Roosevelt was in office.

This Sunday, the 2-4 Redskins host the 3-4 Green Bay Packers. Should Washington win, so the pattern goes, George W. Bush should win re-election. Democrats and John Kerry backers will be pulling for the Packers.

This puts some members of the opposing teams in a strange predicament. Most of them, however, would rather deal with their opponents rather than this statistical anomoly.

'I'm not much into politics' said Redskins linebacker Marcus Washington. 'All I know is, it's going to be a tough week for us. Brett Favre is tough. Ahman Green is tough. Those are two tough candidates right there.'

Some players had fun with it. 'So if we win, Kerry's going to be the man,' Packers wide receiver Donald Driver said. 'That's fine, just so we win.'

Meanwhile, the candidates themselves are having fun with it. John Kerry's running mate John Edwards has already publically backed the Packers, at least for this Sunday.

For what it's worth, Green Bay is a two point favorite to win on Sunday.
