People all over the world rejoice, the Academy Awards just might be interesting this year. Outspoken comedian Chris Rock has been chosen to host the 77th annual Academy Awards. The move was probably made to try to attract younger viewers especially in light of the disastrously-low ratings that the Emmy Awards received this year. Host Garry Shandling was partially blamed for a show that was low on surprises and heavy on boredom.
Rock a former 'Saturday Night Live' cast member, who is known for being outrageous and free with the profanities will probably have to be bleeped repeatedly and a tape delay will most likely be in effect. Still audiences who are curious to see what Rock might do might be more likely to tune in than they would if Oscar mainstay Billy Crystal was the host yet again. No word yet on whether Rock will have to participate in any of the traditional ridiculous dance numbers.
'I am a huge fan of Chris Rock,' producer Gil Gates said in a statement explaining the decision. 'Chris represents the best of the new generation of comics.' Rock has hosted the MTV Video Music Awards in the past.
Last year's Oscars did well in the ratings, averaging 43.5 million viewers. The Oscar producers have made a bold choice by choosing Rock and hopefully it will pay off. Crystal has been a perennial fan favorite but the Academy is clearing looking for his successor.
Rock is a three-time Emmy winner who is currently shooting a remake of The Longest Yard with Adam Sandler.
